I've read books with far too much description and I had to skip it. It was painful. The reverse is also a problem. Im working a fantasy novel so setting is essential. This will help me narrow down which parts are most important and add them appropriately. Thanks for the tips and I'll be writing this draft with an eye and an ear and a nose towards describing setting using the other senses.LaurenLouise57https://www.blogger.com/profile/15080076163650267365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539581256374625880.post-20520795080184656302015-05-22T06:25:11.961-04:002015-05-22T06:25:11.961-04:00I am working on a fantasy novel and though I infus...I am working on a fantasy novel and though I infuse the setting as you said, I've noticed, rightly, that I focuse only on what the eyes see, I don't write about smell or taste. I think setting is one area where a writer's voice can really shine through depending upon which elements that choose to highlight and how they portray various aspects. It's a difficult balance to find between telling too much and not giving enough detail! :-)Jody Hedlundhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12424307540530719614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539581256374625880.post-31207452306236520502015-04-28T09:49:12.949-04:002015-04-28T09:49:12.949-04:00Jody, you are spot on when it comes to setting, an...Jody, you are spot on when it comes to setting, and you are a master of weaving the setting of your books into the plot. That's one area where I am disappointed in many books. The characters take precedent over setting, and I like to be swept into the story, feeling the surroundings with an acute sense of where I am visiting. Thank you for sharing this very important aspect of writing, and keep up the beautiful descriptive qualities that you weave into your stories!Nanceehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12588677121611836251noreply@blogger.com
